    Dystopian books (We)

Topic: Cultural setting of the work and related issues. This will be an analysis of how specific events of the cultural setting that Zamyatin was writing in influenced the novel We. I will look at these events both in the real world and how they appear in the book. This will include:

    1. Industrialization/Rationalization of Labor

    2. Totalitarianism

    3. Exporting Revolution (the Integral)

Idea: I would like to connect the colors in We to what effect it has on the book and how this could change or enhance the way the book is interpreted. For example, I want to look to why Yevgeny Zamyatin chose to make the wall green and everything outside the society is referenced as green in color. What significance does this color have and what it could say about this outside world compared to the society that the "numbers" live in. Also, towards the end of the novel the operation people are wearing white and there are more references to things being in white. Zamyatin also references to multiple colors when he speaks of thing such as dreams so this could either refer to a mixture of emotions or maybe confusion. I would like to think that he chose these colors for a reason.

  3. IOP book: The Stranger
Topic: the examination of a particular interpretation of a work.
Compare the version of The Stranger that we read in class, which was translated by Matthew Ward in 1988, to Stuart Gilbert’s 1946 version. How do different translations evoke different moods in the reader? How does the author’s tone change through different translations to reflect Meursault’s thoughts? Does the same passage in a different translation have the same meaning as we deduced in class? How do the different translations of the title influence the reader?

  4. Book: Their Eyes Were Watching God
Description: I will be analyzing the influence of African American folktales on Zora Neale Hurston's: Their Eyes Were Watching God. I will be looking if and what elements are the same between the folktales and the novel. I will also be looking at what is different. I will also try to analyze why she used some of the elements and not others.

The Stranger – Comparison of secondary characters, their dialogue and actions which characterize the main character.
Reading this book, I noticed that the Raymond, Marie, and Salamano all have characteristics attributes that further illustrate Meusault’s uncanny character either by contrasting or mirroring it. Marie exemplifies everything Meursault is not, while Raymond and Salamano mirror his character in their own ways.
I want to give a presentation about the background of the book, why it was written and then lay out the actions of each character. Once each character’s actions have been laid out, I will connect the actions of each character with the other (I hope this is making sense?). Then I will go into detail about the literary techniques used to characterize each character and how they build off of each other (the above will be in a structured-discussion/oral expose type format).
This presentation will give the audience a chance to think about character traits and actions and how they really characterize other characters (foils) and how Camus’ book the stranger is actually very well thought out. I hope to bring about a greater appreciation for his work and help readers see that a simple act by a character is always done for a reason.
I’ll have a special poster board for each character and their actions, and then I will show similarities and differences and then analyze their overall actions and dialogues.

Topic: For my IOP I would like to show how Huxley shows that individualism is important in society through his dystopia of Brave New World. I would find examples of characterization in Bernard and the Savage to show this importance. I would also find more examples of the importance in the symbolism of the government that he includes. This topic is important to our reality because other wise we are no one and nothing matters. Ultimately the lack of individualism would lead this dystopia of the Brave New World.

  8. Name: Chris Caldwell
    Book: The Stranger
Topic: Characterization; Emotionless Meursault, why Camus puts him in the story, how other secondary characters foil Meursault and emphasize his personality, contrasts his behavior with a present day reader’s “normal” expectations

  9. For my IOP, I would like to do the dystopian novel choice. The dystopian novel I will do is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. I will focus on characterization of the characters, mainly the protagonist, Offred. I will also focus on Offred’s motivation and her flashbacks throughout the book. I will do an oral expose.

  10. I would like to The Stranger.
I would like to do my IOP on Camus’ view on existentialism. I will connect it to why people tied him with existentialism and how he proves that, but also how he contradicts it in his own writings. I will focus on his nonexistential views because they are the contradictions. Also, I will look at other writers of that time period and their connections to existentialism.
I will look at the ties to existentialism rather than studying existentialism itself.

    IOP Book: The Handmaid's Tale
Topic: Different perspectives of a society. People with a lot of power vs people with no power (handmaids vs commanders etc...)
I can analyze the Commander and how he breaks the rules and yet he has so much power. He would never want to get caught however because his life is so fulfilling as it is right now. The two times of Handmaids that are in the novel would also be interesting to look at. The first Ofwarren and the second differ greatly, but is that only because Offred had not gotten to know the second one as well?

I could possibly show this by using a game of scrabble. The audience will be able to see the game differently because of their power/advantages.

For my IOP I want to put Camus existentialist/absurdist philosophy in historical context and connect it to other existentialist/absurdist works from the time, such as artwork by artists such as Alberto Giacometti and Francis Bacon

  14. I would like Their Eyes Were Watching God. I would like to look at what was going on historically when Hurston wrote the novel. I would like to compare the characters and their struggles and see if it relates to anyone or anything going on during the time. Also i would like to look at the culture during the time so that I can understand more what Hurston was meaning to say.

Topic: How does Orwell use history in order to warn the future about the dangers of totalitarianism?

I'm considering having Orwell defend his book in front of a board. He would point out the warnings, history and continued necesity and importance of his work

  16. IOP Choice: The Stranger
Topic: I would focus on the way Camus portrays Meursault to the way Camus portrays society's reaction to Meursault. Camus portrays Meursault as an individual who believes that nothing really means anything because people can do things or they could just as well have not done them. Through Meursault, Camus creates a character who has his own understanding of life (even though his undersnding is different then what society wants) Because of the point of view that we get as the reader, we know how Meursault is. Yet we get society's view of Meursault -that he is a man with a future and past to think about, which is different from what he know of Meursault -that he is a man who lives in the moment and does not initially take his past and future into consideration. Basically, what I want to say with my IOP is that Camus portrays the concept that untimately what society wants is more powerful then what the individual wants (if he or she wants to contribute/live in that society).

  17. Pablo Neruda
-Comparing his poems to what was going on in his life at that point in time
-comparing two of his poems to each other and compare what is the same with the two poems
-show through the elements of literature what each of these poems are saying and what it says about society at that time

    Poetry - Pablo Neruda

I would like to focus on the works of Pablo Neruda, and analyzing one of his more politically focused poems like I am Accused. I want to show the correlation between one or two of his poems with his political views.

I would like to analyze two poems as a comparison, looking for similarities in between his focus on symbols in nature, the structure of his poems. I could possibly compose a music piece to go along with the poem(s).

My IOP will be a comparison of the works of Neruda and Ting. I'll be examining their styles and see if there is a parallel between both poets. I'll also be looking at their differences. The primary thing that will be observed will be their literary techniques and how they're being used by both poets.

  22. I would like to do Pablo Neruda and analyze how he incorporates nature into his poems and what sort of message the reader gets from it based on different techniques he uses. I will be looking at multiple poems from Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair.

  23. The Stranger

I will explore the culture that Camus is coming from and the influences that inspire his book to come up with a plausible thesis. I plan to use literary terms to define this thesis and to learn more about the environment presented in The Stranger.

  24. I would like to do Shu Ting and look at how she incorprates chinese culture into her works. I will also be looking at how her background affects her poetry. What impact does it have on the reader? What does it do the poems? What techniques does she use and how does it affect the poem itself? I will look at how her works reflect off of the society and what it reveals about it. I will also be comparing poems that we look at in class versus the ones that we do not look at to see how they are similar.

    Dystopian
    Book: WE

Topic: An analysis of the permeable aspects of the mind of a human being, in this case, D-503. (Characterization)

    Details:

-Our thoughts on how the world should be structured is dependent on the "soil" we grow upon. In this case, D-503 has grown in a society where the most radical forms of socialism, communism and totalitarianism exist.
-That the idea of self identity and imagination are not permanently instilled into us but just another trait we received from evolution through gradual exposure to "free will". This will explain D-503's experiences with his "soul" and how he ultimately ends up back where he started in terms of ideological beliefs. I think this point relates to the concept of "survival of the fittest" of the mentally dominant.
-Our value of lives is relative based upon our beliefs.

In each of these points I will compare D-503's characterization to that of a person with modern beliefs.

Activity: Structured Discussion. I will present a summarization of a main point and I will defend my points.

  26. I would like to do Their Eyes Were Watching God. I am going to take the symbols and metaphors in the book and analyze them from different cultures including Idian, South African, Grecian, and Chinese. Then further explain how these different interpretations can change the overall interpretation of the novel.

  27. I think i'd like to use The Stranger by Albert Camus as the subject of my IOP. I intend to compare and contrast the different philosophies and views that some have used to try and define Camus, this and other writings of his. I would like to attempt to show what qualities of each of these are related to the works and which arent. I would discuss some themes of the book I found to be notable including Mersaults view of death both before and after he himself killed. I would also attempt to compare what might relate to the book in terms of what was occuring in the world at the time of this books writing as well as comparing the views of Camus and his character Mersault. If this didnt pan out I guess I could read some poetry instead.

  28. I would like to use the book Their Eyes Were Watching God for my IOP. I plan to talk about Hurstons strong motifs that appear throughout the book and how these motifs allow the book to continue forward. I will also talk about the style in which she writes and the effects this has on the text.

  30. Sorry this took awhile as well... I just created my blog today.
For my IOP, I would like to cover Their Eyes Were Watching God, and focus on dialect. I plan to look at the dialect from the novel, and talk about how it affects the way its interpreted. I may also look into dialects in general, and further show how dialect plays a big role into interpretation.
